Regulatory Standards Bill

The Regulatory Standards Bill was introduced to parliament on 19 November 2024 - the same day the Hikoi mō te Tiriti arrived at parliament.
We believe this timing was deliberate, to slip this bill in while public attention was focused on the Treaty Principles Bill.
The Ministry for Regulation is currently consulting on the key components of the proposed Bill.
The consultation period closes on 13 January 2025.
Why should you be concerned about the bill?
The Ministry for Regulation's own Treaty Impact Analysis for the proposed Bill states:
"the proposals do not include a principle related to the Treaty/te Tiriti and its role as part of good law-making, meaning that the Bill is effectively silent about how the Crown will meet its duties under the Treaty/te Tiriti in this space. ... we anticipate that the absence of this explicit reference may be seen as politically significant for Māori and could be perceived as an attempt by the Crown to limit the established role of the Treaty/te Tiriti as part of law-making."
There are also many other concerning things about the bill - please see the links below to articles, podcasts and videos for more information.
